TÜRKİYE’DE FAALİYET GÖSTEREN MEVDUAT BANKALARININ PERFORMANS ANALİZİ: BÜYÜKLÜK VE SAHİPLİK YAPISI AYRIMIYLA BİR KARŞILAŞTIRMA

Abstract

EXTENDED SUMMARY Background Today, since the competition in every kind of market intensifies, business entities must measure and review their performance regularly to survive in highly competitive environment. As competitive olygopolistic market players, banks are also obliged to check the performance levels relative to other banks in the market. By this way, weak and strong characteristics of each bank can be determined and proper strategies to catch up the competition can be implemented by banks. In this context, there are different bank performance measurement methods in the literature and practice. CAMELS analysis is a comprehensive method to measure bank performance in terms of capital adequacy, asset quality, management quality, earning capacity, liquidity and sensitivity to market risk. Purpose The aim of this study is analysing performance of Turkish deposit banks which have different ownership structure and asset size by CAMELS method. By this way, implications on the relationships of bank size-bank performance and bank ownership structure-bank performance can be derived. Literature In the literature, the papers related to the CAMELS analysis can be divided into three categories. The first category is embodied by the studies that divide banks into sub-groups according to the different bank characteristics like ownership structure and compare the bank sub-groups CAMELS performance scores. Second category includes the papers that critique efficiency of CAMELS method in terms of measuring bank performance. The last category of papers aim to determine the effect of CAMELS score on different bank characteristics. Data & Methodology The data of the paper is acquired from the Turkey Association of Banks database. Data includes 27 Turkish deposit banks’ financial table information between 2012-2016 years The method used in the study to measure bank performance is CAMELS analysis. This analysis shows the positive & negative differentation of each bank from sector average in terms of capital adequacy, asset quality, management quality, earning capacity, liquidity and sensitivity to market risk components. As a function of differentation from sector average, the numbers between 1-5 are assigned to each bank in different performance components. 1 means the best and 5 means the worst performance. In this paper, 27 Turkish deposit banks are divided into subgroups of smallest asset sized 9 deposit banks, largest asset sized 9 deposit banks and median sized 9 deposit banks in terms of asset size and public capital, private capital and foreign capital deposit banks in terms of ownership structure. Then the CAMELS performance scores of the subgroups are compared. Findings & Conclusion According to the CAMELS score comparison of Turkish deposit banks’ asset size and ownership structure based subgroups, public, private and foreign capital deposit banks have similar performance results. However, smallest asset sized 9 deposit banks have better performance than largest sized 9 and median sized 9 deposit banks. As a result of the analysis, for Turkish banks, asset size may be a more influential factor on bank performance relative to the ownership structure. Another conclusion that can be derived from the study is that smaller banks have better performance. The reason behind this conclusion is that small organizations are more flexible to answer changes in the environment.
