TYPES OF NARRATORS IN THE NOVEL ŽEMAIČIO GARLĖKYS BY VYTAUTAS MARTINKUS

Journal Title: Jaunųjų mokslininkų darbai - Year 2015, Vol 43, Issue 1

Abstract

In his historical novel Žemaičio garlėkys (2009), Vytautas Martinkus has modified an established tradition of novel writing by introducing an innovative mode of narration enriched with a multitude of documents, records, notes, letters, etc. Genette's concept of narratology was used to reveal the character of the narrator of the novel Žemaičio garlėkys and discuss the types of the narrators. Two approaches were used to identify the narrator: through his relationship with the story (an intradiegetic narrator exists within the story world, an extradiegetic narrator exists outside the story world) and through his participation in the story (a homodiegeti / autodiegetic narrator is the protagonist of the story, a heterodiegetic narrator is not the protagonist of the story). Two main types of narrators were identified in the novel Žemaičio garlėkys : an extradiegetic narrator and an intradiegetic narrator, who is also a homodiegetic narrator, a protagonist of the story. By using the both types of narrators, the author avoided bias in his novel and did not become an omniscient narrator; he allowed the reader to compose the narration by putting together stories told by different narrators, to create his own story and thus become his co-author. Not surprisingly, the narration flashes back (analepsis) or jumps forth in time (prolepsis) – that is how the writer demonstrates that the relationship between reasons and consequences cannot be determined everywhere. That shows that the types of the narrators and the protagonists of the novel Žemaičio garlėkys by Martinkus are close to fiction writing trends in the 20th century. Keywords: narratology, narrator, extradiegetic narrator, intradiegetic narrator, narrative, prolepsis, analepsis, narrative function, control function, communication function, testimonial function, ideological function
