Uncovering the Spectrum: Exploring Challenges Faced by Transgender People within and beyond the LGBTQIA+ Community

Abstract
The study delved into the multifaceted challenges encountered by transgender individuals within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community. It sought to comprehend their lived experiences, encompassing discrimination, social dynamics, familial rejection, mental health implications, and hurdles in personal relationships. Employing a phenomenological research design. The seven transgender participants were given the option of virtual or face-to-face interviews, conducted in a confidential and secure environment in the Mandaluyong area. A semi-structured interviewing technique was employed, with interview questions validated by experts in Psychology. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify emergent themes, with a sample size of seven achieving data saturation. The study identified three superordinate themes: (1) Inclusivity and Setbacks in the LGBTQIA+ Community, (2) Experienced Challenges and Barriers and (3) Impact of Support Systems in Overcoming Hurdles. The findings revealed a complex landscape for transgender individuals, with both inclusivity and setbacks within the LGBTQIA+ community. Discrimination, social dynamics, and challenges in personal relationships emerged as prominent themes. The LGBTQIA+ community offers belongingness, progression, and growth, there are inherent difficulties in fitting into societal norms within the community. Future research is recommended to explore interventions and practices fostering more supportive and inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals, acknowledging the existing challenges and promoting growth and empowerment.
