Utility of cerebrospinal fluid analysis in pediatric central nervous system infections

Abstract

Objective: To assess the role of cerebrospinal fluid analysis (CSF) in central nervous system infection in pediatric age group. Methods: A retrospective study of CSF analysis in 50 children (≤ 12 years) who were suspected to have central nervous system infection was carried out. The patients were divided into three groups. Group I included patients with age range from newborn to 28 days. Group II included patients with age range from 29 days to 60 days. Group III included patients with age range from >60days to 12 years. The CSF findings that were analyzed included leukocyte count, glucose levels and protein levels. Results: Fifty patients who underwent CSF analysis were included in the study. 68% were >60 days of age (Group III), 8% were between 29-60 days of age (Group II) and 24% were <29 days of age (Group I). Most of them were males (62%). The most common symptom was fever (74%) and most of the cases were of febrile seizures (36%). Pleocytosis (72.5cells/mm3), decreased glucose levels (37.5mg/dl) and raised protein levels (92.5mg/dl) were observed in meningitis (8%). Conclusion: CSF analysis is certainly a basic, useful and cost effective tool in the diagnosis of meningitis and also whenever central nervous system infection is suspected.
