VALUES EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS AS A MODEL CASE

Abstract

Although teaching values is an important duty of all concerned stakeholders, it is expected from schools to take new responsibilities in this respect. As a reflection of this responsibility, it has been implemented various programs with different names associated with values education in the world. Values education, designed as an essential part of school education in Australia, draws attention as a state funded initiative and implementation. The projects, which conducted within the scope of values education in Australia, have gained significant momentum from 2002 and have begun a series of steps within school system. This study aims to describe implementations of values education which designed by Australian Government in the shape of comprehensive and project based works and as an essential component of schooling. It is thought that the analysis of experiences obtained from planned and systematic values education implementations in Australia can contribute to similar initiatives on this subject. Within the scope of the study some implementations associated with values education in Australian schools are being introduced like “Values Education Study”, “National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools”, “Values Education Good Practice Schools Project-Stage I-II, “The Values in Action Schools Project”, also being informed about significant outputs of these projects.
