Abstract
The Impact of the Interpretive Turn in Qualitative Research Methods, or the Infl uence of Categories Drawn From Literary Studies on Anthropological Research Practices The interpretive and literary turn in socio-cultural anthropology prompted not only the ‘textual movement’ in human sciences, but also gave a new direction to fi eldwork. Gradual absorption of ssumptions of interpretivism by methodology of anthropological research may be observed at the level of anthropological discourse. In literature on qualitative research methods, the so-called interpretive paradigm that marks out frames of research conducted within anthropology, sociology, pedagogy and strands related to cultural critique, functions in clear opposition to the positivist tradition developed within social sciences. This paper relates to the idea of reading, interpreting and translating culture in analogy to philologically understood text, which has been present in publications on fi eldwork, particularity those on the methodology of qualitative research.Discourse analysis present in these publications clearly shows that Geertz's ideas not only inspired ‘textual movement’ in humanities, but also prompted a redefi nition of the situation and process of fieldwork.
