WSPÓŁCZESNE NAWIĄZANIA DO MYŚLI THORSTEINA VEBLENA

Abstract
The paper presents ideas of Thorstein Veblen and contemporary, unorthodox references to his work. In the book, The Theory of the Leisure Class, issued in 1899, Veblen described the behavior of contemporary American social elite – the eponymous leisure class. He portrays it as a group focused on sophisticated forms of conspicuous consumption, for the purpose of the status competition. The author of this paper argues that the benefits of ideas included in the book of an American sociologist go beyond the cliché of conspicuous consumption. The paper discusses contemporary concept of the leisure class, which according to sociologists, has an equivalent in the category of "bourgeois bohemian" ( “bobo”). It also presents references to Veblen's concept in evolutionary psychology, which examines consumption from the perspective of sexual selection.
