A study on whole brain white matter volume based on voxel-based morphometry in first-episode schizophrenia patients with auditory verbal hallucination

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 8

Abstract

Objective To investigate the changes of whole brain white matter volume in first-episode schizophrenia (SCH) patients with auditory verbal hallucination using voxel-based morphometry ( VBM). Methods Twenty-five firstepisode SCH patients with auditory verbal hallucination in Department of Psychosomatic Medicine, Xijing Hospital, Air Force Medical University were included as patient group, and 25 healthy subjects recruited from the advertisement were selected as control group. Magnetization-prepared rapid gradient-echo sequence was performed and VBM method was used to study the changes of whole brain white matter volume in first-episode SCH patients with auditory verbal hallucination. Results Compared with the control group, the area of increased white matter volume in the patient group was located around Broca's area, while that of decreased white matter volume was located around the right cingulate gyrus and the corona radiata area. There was a positive correlation between the white matter volume around Broca􀆳s area and the positive symptom score of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (r = 0. 588, P < 0. 01). Conclusion The white matter volume in multiple brain regions is abnormal in first-episode SCH patients with auditory verbal hallucination. The increase of white matter volume around the middle prefrontal gyrus may be a potential neuroimaging marker of brain damage in SCH patients with auditory verbal hallucination.
