An Analysis On the Use of Converbs with Negation Marker

Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Since verbs are the basic elements of the langue, they determine the construction of the sentence and each verb requires a certain sentence construction. However, when there is a certain number of word order, the number of verbs is very large and every verb can be negated in finite clauses. Besides, there are certain limitations of negativization in subordinate clauses formed with converbs. Because the converb clauses, which are syntactically linked to an superordinate clause, reflects semantically different relationships and thus change the content of the superordinate clause to which they link from certain aspects. In this respect, when the negation marker is added to the verb of converb clause, the content of the superordinate clause is also affected semantically. In some cases, when a negation marker is added to the converb of the verb of the converb clause, a semantic change in relation between the converb clause and the superordinate clause does not occur, and in some cases various changes may occur. These changes can appear in a variety of ways, such as ambiguity, deformation of grammaticalization, function change of affixes. In this study, the related changes and the limitations of the negativization of the subordinate clauses formed with converbs will be tried to be introduced.
