ANALYSIS OF TEACHING METHODS WHICH FACILITATE READING OF PROFESSIONAL TEXTS IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Abstract

Some methods of teaching non-linguistic students to read professional texts in a foreign language have been analysed in the article. The advantages and disadvantages of the presented methods of teaching non-linguistic students to read professional texts in a foreign language have been highlighted. The author states that reading professional texts in a foreign language makes the knowledge of the English language wider and more profound as well as improves the knowledge of the speciality. The author presents the analysis of the methodic works of the Ukrainian scholars dedicated to the issues regarding the modern methods of teaching non-linguistic students to read professional texts in a foreign language as follows: 1) teaching students of agrarian specialities to read scientific texts (A. Maluga); 2) teaching students of technical schools to read professional texts (G. Barabanova); 3) teaching students of economic specialities to read authentic texts (T. Tarnopolsky); 4) integrative teaching non-linguistic students to read professional texts (U. Degtyarova); 5) developing readiness of students majoring in economics for reading professional texts (S. Radetskay). The conducted analysis of the existing methods of teaching which facilitate reading in a foreign language has shown that in spite of their variety none of them can provide the achievement of specific purposes stipulated by reading authentic specialized texts (sailing directions in particular) targeted to the future navigators. The existing methods cannot guarantee 100 % understanding of English authentic profession-oriented texts, since it is proved to be impossible for them to digest the whole volume of unanticipated linguistic information which is concentrated in them within the period of preliminary studies. That’s why the author intends to elaborate a well-grounded methodic system of teaching future navigators to read English authentic sailing directions on the basis of the most suitable methodic techniques taking into account the specific character of the advanced purposes of teaching students majoring in navigation.
