Annotated Corpus of the Spoken Language: Teaching Instrument Based on Media Technologies

Journal Title: Kalbu studijos / Studies about Languages - Year 2009, Vol 14, Issue 0

Abstract

With the rise of popularity of authentic language usage in applied linguistics, especially in the field of foreign language studies, the annotated corpus of the spoken language as a new medium for learning/teaching languages has been used since 1987. Earlier it was used only in researching and comparing languages, compiling dictionaries, creating the systems of automatic translation. After twenty years the importance of mono or bilingual corpus in teaching languages is evident. The corpus has become not only one of the newest language teaching instruments, but it has become a method for language teaching. For teaching the Lithuanian language a new corpus SACODEL based on the spoken language of teenagers has been created. It is unique not only because of its availability in teaching the authentic language, but it is the first publicly accessible corpus on the Internet media. With the help of the corpus and TELOS a set of exercises to practice grammatical, lexical, and communicative skills has been developed. This innovative way of language learning environment stimulates and motivates the teenagers from all over the European Union to take interest in learning the Lithuanian language.
