Two Types of Grammatical Multiword Units in Lithuanian: sudėtinis žodis, suaugtinis žodis

Journal Title: Kalbu studijos / Studies about Languages - Year 2010, Vol 16, Issue 1

Abstract

Grammatical multiword expressions (MWUs) of Lithuanian are defined as a type of fixed expressions consisting of two or more functional words that form semantically and syntactically unified, non-compositional unit that performs one syntactic function. Grammatical MWUs functionally stand for adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, particles, pronouns, interjections. The goal of the article is to describe the Lithuanian grammatical MWUs in respect to their structural and orthographical features, as in the Lithuanian language grammatical MWUs can consist of two or more words (iki šiol – yet, still, till) or they can be compounds (ikšiol). Compound grammatical MWUs were investigated in the morphologically annotated Corpus of Contemporary Lithuanian Language, and compound particles, compound adverbs, compound prepositions, compound conjunctions, compound interjections were identified and analyzed. The analysis shows that compound grammatical MWUs are less numerous than grammatical MWUs, that are written as a phrase of two or more separated words. The authors discuss the need to distinguish two types of grammatical MWUs in Lithuanian in respect to their structure and spelling: a) MWUs that consist of two or more functional words and are written separately (kažin kas – somebody); b) MWUs that consist of two or more functional words which are written together; the one element of these MWUs is normally reduced (kažkas – somebody). Some terminological inaccuracies of using terms related to compound words and MWUs in Lithuanian were discussed, and two terms sudėtinis žodis, suaugtinis žodis were chosen in order to qualify two types of grammatical MWUs of Lithuanian.
