Abstract
The Anthropology of Rhetoric. Burkean Inspiration in the American Cultural Anthropology The aim of this article is to analyze the theoretical assumptions and methodological directives proposed in the 70s and 80s by the anthropology of rhetoric – a trend in the American cultural anthropology inspired by the work of Kenneth Burke. Contributors of the anthropology of rhetoric recognize that the Burkean theory of language as a symbolic action and concept of literature as equipment for living contains the interpretation categories (rhetorical entitlement, terministic screen, perspectives by incongruity and dramatistic pentad) which are methodologically useful for anthropological studies on the social and cultural use of rhetoric.
