Argot des jeunes dans la pratique du français en milieu universitaire au Bénin

Abstract

Youth slang in the practice of French in Benin academic environment This article has questioned youths’ slang in university environment in Benin. From in situ observation of these youths and semi-guided and guided surveys, we noticed that French practice by these youths takes place in a relative isolation within a highly cohesive peer group, with strong links and exchanges in form of barter and restrictive admission criteria. This retreat on the group is expressed by an appropriate lexical choice. To take back the linguistic market metaphor of Bourdieu, values in circulation are not the ones of the dominant market: their slang is in fact a set of practices within the context of French, characterized by a lexical set produced by the application of change rules and more generally by a process of specific meaning’s change (desemantisation) and new meaning’s attribution (resemantisation). Beninese youths’ slang is adapted to solidarity communicating strategies among peers that enable connivance and implicit short cuts of which they appreciate cohesive and identity values.
