Astudy of open approach versus laparoscopic surgery for the management of groin hernia at tertiary health care centre

Abstract
Background: Hernia is the abnormal exit of an organ or fatty tissue, such as the bowel, through the wall of the cavity in which it normally resides. Aims and Objectives:To Study open approach versus laparoscopic surgery for the management of groin hernia at tertiary health care centre. Methodology: This was a cross –sectional study carried out in the department of surgery in the patients who presented with the clinical features of groin hernia were included into the study with the written and explained consent so during the one year period i.e. March 2018 to March 2019 Was takenWith the standard protocols the 22 patients undergone Open surgery i.e. (Group O) and Laparoscopic surgery (Group L) . The necessary data like age, sex, operative and post-operative parameters were noted and post operative pain was assessed by VAS score (Visual Analogue Score), the statistical analysis was done by SPSS 19 version software.Result: In our study we have seen the average age of the patients was 45 ±3.42Yrs.and 44± 2.72Yrs.was comparable in both the groups (t=0.92,df=43,p>0.05); The ratio of Male and Female was 1.75 and 1.2 was comparable (X2=0.37,df=1,p>0.05). The durations of surgery both the group was 32 ±3.12 and 31± 2.98 was comparable (t=0.98,df=42,p>0.05); Blood lost (ml)wassignificantly less in Group L i.e. 25.12± 4.25 ml as compared to Group O i.e.37.21± 3.42 ( t=10.39,df=42,p<0.05);Recovery time(Hrs.) was significantlylessi.e. 3.42 ± 1.23and 4.56± 2.13(t=4.98,df=42,p<0.05)respectively in Group L as compared to Group O. The VAS score was significantly less in Group L as compared to Group O on theDay 1 (t=4.54,df=42,p<0.05); Day 3 (t=5.12,df=42,p<0.05); Day 6(t=6.78,df=42,p<0.05). The Cosmesis results wereExcellentin63.64%as compared to 18.18%;Goodin 27.27% as compared to 68.18%, Badin9.09%as compared to 13.64%in Group L and Group O respectively this observed difference was statistically significant (X2=9.6,df=2,p<0.05)Conclusion:It can be concluded from our study that Laparoscopic surgery was found to be superior with respect tolessdurations of surgery,less Blood lost , less Recovery time, less painandexcellentCosmesis
