Attitudes towards English Language Learning among Students in Non-Board Programs: A Mixed-Method Study

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of non-board program students in their attitude towards learning English. In this mixed methods design the study used interviews for the qualitative phase, the researcher interviewed 5 non-board program students for focused group discussion and 5 non-board program students for in-depth interview and the quantitative data collected from 278 non-board program students from Kapalong College of Agriculture Sciences and Technology. In the quantitative part, the study employed adapted questionnaire. One statistical tool that was used to describe the level of the study’s variable is mean. The study revealed that students have high level of attitude towards learning English which implies that students have positive attitude towards learning English. The data also shows that students have positive emotions towards learning English as they find learning English is worth it. Positive behavior towards English language learning were also reflected in the result as students were being active in learning the language. Moreover, positive cognition was also depicted in the result as students were able to apply English in real life situation as well as they are being aware in the usefulness of the language. In addition, the quantitative data mostly corroborated with the qualitative data.
