BODY POSTURE IN SCHOOLCHILDREN UNDERGOING REGULAR FOOTBALL TRAINING COMPARED TO THEIR PEERS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. A correct body posture is necessary for a proper physical and mental development in children. Not only parents and guardians, but also gym teachers and trainers of youth athletes are responsible for the body posture of children. As for the latter, their knowledge allows them to recognize incorrect body postures the parents fail to notice. Besides, such people are frequently enormous authorities for children, motivating them to perform dull exercises aimed at postural defect correction.Material and methods. In this paper, body posture and foot arch was compared in 13-15 year old boys, regularly training football (n=30) and their non-sport peers (n=30). A visual body posture analysis according to Kasperczyk and assessment of foot arch by Clark method were carried out. A survey was also prepared, concerning the type and intensity of the respondents' motor activity, apart from training and gym classes.Results. The survey results indicate that schoolchildren regularly playing football usually have more correct body postures. Among non-sport boys, there was a lower percentage of those with a lowered longitudinal foot arch. It was also found that training boys spare more time to spontaneous motor activity than their non-sport peers and more readily perform exercise of high intensity.Conclusions. Participation in football training positively affected body posture and motor habits in 13-15 year old boys. Due to the tendency to thoracic kyphosis and longitudinal foot arch in boys at that age, exercises correcting the positioning of the upper segments of the trunk and lower limbs should be added to the training programme.
