Ceremonial and customary dialect text in Ukrainian in Eastern-Slobozhanian dialectal speech

Abstract

This article describes the language implementation of specific calendar rituals and customs associated with them in the dialect texts of Ukrainian Eastern-Slobozhanian dialects. The author proves that ethnocultural information specific to a particular area is verbalized in dialect texts. Dialect text is regarded as a cultural phenomenon that represents a kind of lexical units used in the researched area. The central point in these texts is the names of holidays, realias specific to certain rituals, magical acts performed by all participants of linguistic community either by relatives of the respondents or by the narrator. Texts with macrotheme «Trinity Holiday» represent series of ceremonies on the eve of the event and on Trinity, which can be the basis for selection of individual microtheme. As Easter holidays and Trinity are regarded to be spiritual and bodily purification, the rituals included making amulets against the evil spirits, performing actions aimed at protecting the family from evil spirits. Plants were used for these purposes. For example, a sweetflag had magical properties to drive off evil spirits, feather grass protected against witches, lovage was used to bathe girls with it to be loved by boys and by all people. Ritual actions were usually represented by motivated, partly motivated and unmotivated combinations of words, most of them in the scientific literature usually referred to ethnophrasems that accumulate long folk culture. Temporal contrast «now – before» is marked by positive feedback to the ancestors and condemning the time when it was forbidden to celebrate Easter and Trinity as a consequence of the general decrease of knowledge about people’s culture and Christian faith.
