Controlling Household Electrical Devices Using SMS Technology

Abstract

This system remotely controls and monitor electrical devices at home. This will benefit the people who have busy lives and usually leave their electrical devices unattended. This study was conducted for the homeowners to determine if controlling their electrical devices can help their convenience. There were forty households surveyed and interviewed. Out of forty households surveyed, 37.5% answered that leaving their appliances unattended is a very serious problem while 70% of them claimed that the implementation of this system is very advantageous. The system uses SMS Technology as method in providing a communication link between remote users and electrical devices. A mobile phone with an android application is used to control household electrical devices. Relatively, this system helps save time, money and energy, and may also lessen or prevent the occurrence of fire cases and accidents due to leaving appliances switched on at home. The top three electrical devices homeowners usually left switched on at home were light bulb, electric fan, and cell phone chargers. Furthermore, this study will benefit those conducting studies concerning controlling and monitoring electrical devices.
