Decreased serum adiponectin is associated with carotid atherosclerotic changes in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Biochemistry - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in world. The early detection of cardiovascular disease and risk identification is paramount to prevent and treat this condition. Even though many risk predictors like lipid profile, early Electrocardiogram changes exist, we need a marker which can predict the occurrence of the cardiovascular events more earlier. Serum Adiponectin is emerging as a risk predictor and a novel biomarker for Coronary vascular disease. Aims: In this study, we investigated the relationship of serum adiponectin levels and carotid intima media thickness in type II diabetic individuals. Materials and Methods: 48 known type II diabetics (aged 35-55 yrs) attending Diabetic OPD on treatment with oral hypoglycemic drugs were taken as study subjects. Anthropometric and metabolic assessments including serum Adiponectin levels were done. B-mode ultrasound imaging of the both common carotid arteries was used to measure common CIMT (Carotid intima-media thickness). Results: CIMT were higher in subjects with hypoadiponectinemia (p<0.013) than subjects with normal adiponectin levels. Serum Adiponectin was negatively associated with age (P<0.05), Conclusion: In diabetic patients, decreased serum adiponectin levels may lead to atherosclerosis of blood vessels and measurement of this can be a good predictor of future vascular events.

Total proteins, albumin and HBA1c in type 2 diabetes mellitus
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance [affecting carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism]. Glycation of proteins, including hemoglobin and albumin have been implicated in...
A study on prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism in rural women
Background and Objectives: Subclinical hypothyroidism is diagnosed with increasing frequency in recent years. It is known to cause dearrangements in lipid, glucose metabolism and have been found to be associated with ath...
Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components among young adults at a tertiary care hospital in Puducherry
Background: Metabolic syndrome refers to a group of risk factors that increase the risk for the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing worl...
Correlation between LDH isoenzyme and lipid profile on the development of ischemic heart disease
Background: In studying patients with myocardial infarction we found a high serum lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) but a normal serum isocitric dehydrogenase (ICD) although the myocardium is rich in both enzymes. For elevation...
Serum glycoproteins in patients with severe depression compared with normal subjects
Background: Depressive illness is considered to be a psychoneuro-immunological disorder due to peripheral immune activation through the release of proinflammatory cytokines. Cytokines enhance the hepatic synthesis of gly...
