Effects of different physical exercise durations on cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly people aged 55—65 years old

Journal Title: Health Science and Management - Year 2024, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Objective:To explore the effects of different duration of physical exercise on cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly people. Methods:A single factor within-group experimental design was used (simple factor design of within-subjects), the independent variable was the duration of physical exercise, includes 4 levels of pre-physical exercise, 1-month physical exercise, 3-month physical exercise and 6-month physical exercise. The dependent variables were five indicators of executive functioning (Stroop task), global cognitive function, spatial cognitive ability, delayed recall ability and attention. Results:continued moderate-intensity physical exercise for 1 month improves executive function in middle-aged and elderly participants, best results when reaching 3 months; continued moderate-intensity physical exercise for 6 months can improve the overall cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly participants; continuous moderate-intensity physical exercise for 1 month can improve the response time of spatial cognition of middle-aged and elderly participants, and the correct rate of spatial cognition can be improved by 6 months; Continuous 6 months of moderate-intensity physical exercise can improve the delayed recall ability of middle-aged and elderly participants; continuous exercise for 6 months has a tendency to improve the attention of middle-aged and elderly participants. Conclusion:The optimal duration of physical exercise required to improve different cognitive functions varies among middle-aged and elderly people aged 55 to 65 years, and sustained physical exercise for a period of 6 months has a significant contribution to their cognitive function.
