Efficacy of Topical Clobetasol Propionate and Calcitriol Ointment (0.05% and 0.0003% w/w) versus Clobetasol Propionate and Salicylic Acid Ointment (0.05% and 3%) in Treatment of Mild Chronic Plaque Psoriasis
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Research and Practice - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction Psoriasis is a common, chronic, inflammatory condition of the skin with a wide range of clinical presentation such as symmetrical, erythematous, well defined, dry, red, scaly papules and plaques. There are various topical and systemic modalities available for its treatment but very less studies has been done on topical modalities in Indian population, so to generate Indian data and see effect of topical agents in psoriasis this study has been undertaken. Aims and Objectives To compare efficacy of topical clobetasol propionate and calcitriol ointment (0.05% and 0.0003%) versus clobetasol propionate and salicylic acid ointment (0.05% and 3%) in the treatment of mild Psoriasis vulgaris. Materials and Methods Patients were randomised after considering various inclusion & exclusion criteria into two groups. Group A [clobetasol propionate and calcitriol ointment (0.05% and 0.0003%)] and Group B-[ clobetasol propionate and salicylic acid ointment (0.05% and 3%)] with 10 patients in each group, were treated in dermatology OPD,AVBRH, Sawangi over a period of 6months. Based on PASI score, clinical improvement in signs & symptoms were assessed at 0, 2 and 4 weeks. Conclusion In the initial phase of psoriasis, clobetasol propionate and salicyclic acid ointment should be preferred because it is cost effective but in psoriasis of long duration, the combination should be preferred on the basis of its efficiency.
