FORMAL-COMPOSITIONAL AND COMPOSITIONAL-NOTIONAL FEATURES OF SCHOLARLY MONOGRAPHS BY DAVID LODGE
Journal Title: Наукові записки Національного університету "Острозька академія" Серія "Філологія" - Year 2017, Vol 66, Issue 66
Abstract
The paper presents analysis of formal-compositional and compositional-notional features of scholarly monographs by David Lodge. It is determined that formal-compositional dimension is represented by traditional elements that are historically peculiar to the genre of monograph. Peripheral elements such as contents, introduction, conclusion, bibliographical list, etc. are essential components of the polytextual structure of the analyzed monographs. They form a pragmatic frame programming thematic deployment of the main text, therefore, highlighting significant aspects of knowledge, which are aimed at satisfying the information needs of the recipient. Examples of compositional-notional dimension illustrate the variety of communicative blocks caused by the syncretism of the linguistic identity of the author, who works at the intersection of scholarly, journalistic and artistic discourses. In the analyzed monographs the most common communication blocks are the following: “introduction of the topic”, “setting goals and objectives of the research”, “a brief history of the issue”, “expression of gratitude”, “a brief overview of the structure”, which are fairly typical of the genre of monograph. However, within the peripheral part, along with typical there are as well specific communication blocks such as: “history of writing and publishing”, “biography”, “reference to own works”, “autobiographical reminiscences”, “references to the sources of previous publications”.
