IDENTIDADE E VOCAÇÕES DA PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM EDUCAÇÃO

Journal Title: Ideação - Year 2018, Vol 20, Issue 2

Abstract

In this essay I maintain that graduate schools produce scientific knowledge and therefore research is their main activity. I list the five functions that structure the purposes of graduate studies: to produce new knowledge, to further develop knowledge related to professional formation, to form new researchers, to improve the qualifications of tertiary education teachers and to form intellectuals knowledgeable about the culture (history, dynamics) of a given field of study. In order to produce knowledge about its object, research must have solid epistemological, methodological and technical foundations. Epistemological choices pertain to the subject/object relationship adopted by the researcher. Methodological choices are connected to how the researcher approaches his or her object and must be in line with the epistemological standpoint; finally, the technical aspect comprehends operational tools and procedures required to apply the chosen methodology. The technical- methodological strategy has two vectors: a more general one, related to general scientific procedures, and another, more specific, related to procedures that are specific to each field of study. In this essay I also demonstrate that science developed in graduate schools must also deal with other demands: the social relevance of what is studied, political sensibility and ethical legitimacy.
