ILL, NERVOUS OR INADEQUATELY PARENTED? PROBLEMS ACCOMPANYING ASSESSMENT OF CHILDREN UP TO THREE YEARS OF AGE

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 45, Issue 3

Abstract

Abstract: Assessment of young children requires specific assessment competence from the psychologist. Often, parents do not understand why their child is the subject of a psychological assessment, and prefer to search for the reasons for their child’s worrying behaviors in health factors, considering him or her as “nervous” or “ill” instead of being “inadequately parented,” which certainly helps them to remove the burden of responsibility for the child’s behaviors, but simultaneously creates mistrust toward the psychologist’s actions. Many psychologists are not willing to assess young children. They often lack experience and are not prepared for situations accompanying such an assessment: they do not know how to respond to the child’s resistance, anger or crying, how to quickly and efficiently establish a proper relationship with him or her, how to react to parents’ questions and mistrust, and finally, how to assess the child in their presence. They also have difficulty communicating with the child who still cannot express his or her thoughts and needs verbally. Sometimes parents adopt a demanding attitude, trying to force the psychologist to issue an opinion useful for their own needs (e.g. financial needs). Finally, assessment of young children is often given up as a result of time pressures, which significantly influence the conditions in which psychological assessment is carried out.
