Implementation of Eclectic Criteria in Teaching English at Primary School

Abstract
The article has analysed and generalised the content of contemporary methods and approaches to teaching English in order to provide options for their integrated use at primary school to teach the English language to primary school pupils. The author has demonstrated that the use of eclecticism in English teaching at primary level will have a significant impact on the success of a learning process and contribute to a better understanding of the communicative, efficient and personal orientation of the English language teaching. It will be also useful for improvement of the quality of development and the effectiveness of the application of appropriate techniques, methods and types of educational activities in the English teaching process at primary school. In this context, the article has distinguished the most appropriate methods and approaches to English teaching to be combined successfully that have the underlying principles of humanistic, communicative, active and culture-based teaching and take age-related peculiarities and personality and temperament types into account. The author has drawn attention to Communicative Language Teaching, Content-based Instruction, Content and Language Integrated Learning, the Whole Language Method, Competency-based Language Teaching, Task-based Language Teaching, The Lexical Approach, Cooperative Language Learning, Total Physical Response, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Project Method, Station Teaching Method, and others. Consequently, after having studied and generalised the data concerning the content aspects, the author has made certain premises on relevant application of the above-mentioned methods and approaches in a productive combination that is logically interwoven in the educational process in a manner that satisfies the present-day requirements for the direction the educational process should be guided. It has been stated that an academic course can be developed and implemented in the university curriculum that will not only form students’ knowledge of the theoretical foundations of English teaching and comprehension of the complex and applied nature of the methodology as a science. It will also aim to teach students how to analyse carefully, choose correctly, combine effectively and apply relevantly the latest methods for successful English language teaching at primary school.
