Instituted social imaginaries in leisure and recreation

Journal Title: Prohominum - Year 2024, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Objective: the objective of this study was to identify the social imaginaries held by professionals in the field of leisure and recreation in Latin America. Methodology: quantitative approach, with cross-sectional descriptive research. The population corresponded to the participants of the III International Congress of Recreation and Leisure, organized virtually by FUNDABRIC between November 13 and 19, 2023. The sampling was non-probabilistic of accidental type, with 136 informants. Results: a majority of informants have professional training, some have been self-taught; although most of them claim to be able to differentiate between the notions of leisure, recreation, play, free time, playful activity, the truth is that they blur this notion as it is made equivalent to a very wide diversity of concepts; there is inconsistency between the notion they claim to have of play, the idea of autotelia, and its application as a didactic strategy in the school context. Finally, they consider that public policies and legislation on leisure and recreation are the responsibility of the State, that the production of knowledge is a priority of the universities, and that the main role of the family is to be beneficiaries. Conclusions: what the scientific evidence shows is confirmed, that is, that although the field of leisure and recreation is strengthened in terms of structure, institutionalism, legislation, public policies, from the epistemic point of view, there is a need to advance towards a consensus that consolidates the field, taking in to account the social imaginaries shared by this professional group
