Abstract

The aim of this text is to show the most important facts from John Amos Comenius’ life that make him a great pedagogue and to try to provide my own reception of his pedagogical legacy, also with reference to the assessment of his pedagogical ideas by Polish comeniologists. I am emphasising Comenius’ sense of historic mission of a moral revival of humankind, which could only be achieved in the constant process of education available to everyone according to his Christian belief that all human beings are equal in the eyes of God. In academic circles John Amos Comenius has been recognised as a man whose involvement and merits in the development of modern pedagogical thought are of great value, mainly because of his pioneer vision of univer-salism in teaching everyone about everything and creating a holistic concept of the school sys-tem. Although it has almost been 400 years since the beginnings of his pedagogical activity, his ideas are still being discussed, interpreted and reinterpreted.
