Knowledge of pupils and students with Białystok on use of dietary supplements

Abstract

Introduction. Apart from the endless benefits of dietary supplements – through unlimited access – they are used excessively and enjoyed in an uncontrolled manner, which can contribute to adverse health effects. Aim. The aim of the study was to compare and evaluate the level of knowledge respondents and to provide preferences in choosing dietary supplements. Material and methods. The survey was conducted among 80 students of Public Health at the Medical University of Bialystok and 80 pupils toward pharmacy technician Post- -Secondary School No. 1 Health Care in Bialystok using author’s questionnaire. Results. The vast majority of respondents declared that met with the term “dietary supplement” (95.6%). More than half of respondents (55.0%) declared that knows the definition of “dietary supplement”. Almost a quarter of respondents (23.1%) believed that dietary supplements are safe. More than half of respondents (56.9%) read in detail by taking leaflet dietary supplement. The majority of respondents (55.6%) to the question whether taking supplements is beneficial, replied “probably yes”. Conclusions. 1. The use of dietary supplements should be aware of and argued for health reasons, since excessive intake of such preparations can cause serious health complications. 2. There is a need for increased education of young people in the direction of sensible nutrition, vitamin supplementation, as well as knowledge of the risks arising from their use. 3. There is a need to oblige producers to the mandatory information to buyers about the possible likelihood of adverse effects from vitamins and minerals.
