LE FRANÇAIS DANS LA PRESSE ECRITE DU NORD-CAMEROUN : DIAGNOSTIC, CRITIQUES ET ORIENTATIONS
Journal Title: Studii de Gramatica Contrastiva - Year 2013, Vol 20, Issue 20
Abstract
The present work is rooted in the language crisis observed in the written press in the Northern part of Cameroon. This crisis is the result of a good number of language deviations attested in the French language spoken in that area of the country. As a matter of fact, one witnesses an over increasing number of syntactic deviations as well as an emergence of other depreciative language deviations. Verbal clumsiness, poor students’ performances in class and during official exams are perfectly symptomatic of this state of matters. In addition, it is crucial to mention that the linguistic cohabitation between Cameroonian languages and French on the one hand, under education, lax chief-editors alongside irresponsibility of some companies’ managers on the other hand underlie such deviations. Though, undoubtedly, media constitute a model, or better still a paragon of the norm devoid of any language irregularities in society. Contrary to expectations, the hallmarks of the written press in that part of Cameroon run counter to this prime vocation of media. As a result, the research question is whether under education, lax chief-editors and irresponsibility of companies’ managers as mentioned above are likely to favour the growing of French ‘dialectization’. The core of this endeavour is to examine under close scrutiny the motivations for language deviations which lead journalists to break away from the norm that governs Standard French. In this vein, focus is not only on a critical investigation of the phenomenon, but also, proposals are made in view to improving language use in written media. The research hypothesis which constitutes our starting point is that poor language use witnessed in the written press of the Northern part of Cameroon stems from the above mentioned factors namely, under education, lax chief-editors and irresponsibility of companies’ managers among others. To carry out the reflection, a descriptive and contrastive approach is adopted on the basis diverse sources including reference books, papers, documentaries, dissertations, theses among others.
