Le jargon dans le Mystère des Trois Doms (1509) : éléments de traduction

Abstract
The existence of slang in French is attested since the thirteenth century: usually called « jargon », it is at first the technolect among the thieves and/or socially marginalized individuals. This language is mainly known through the archives of the Coquillards’ trial, which took place in 1455 in Dijon, and through the Ballades attributed to Villon in the fifteenth century. Old slang is also found in mysteries from late Middle Ages, which are not unproblematic: it is indeed an essentially oral and voluntarily cryptic language, not always listed and with often obscure meaning. The present paper aims therefore to study slang terms in the Mystère des Trois Doms – of which we are preparing a new critical edition. This text of about 11,000 verses written in Middle French was represented in 1509 in Romans, and contains many terms and slang phrases, which don’t always appear in dictionaries or specialized studies. We propose to study these in context to better define their meaning and to give a translation into modern French to facilitate the reader’s under-standing: we will thus explore the dual problem of intralinguistic translation in diachrony.
