Les divergences entre l’argot français et l’argot bulgare. Le cas de la traduction d’un roman de Viktor Paskov

Abstract
This article focuses on the differences between French and Bulgarian slang, in respect of their evolution, their status in society, their formation, their relations with the ordinary language and their transition into literature. Some issues, which these differences can create for the translator are outlined below: the translator has to avoid terms that carry particularities specific to the target language slang in order not to domesticate the original. He/She should rather draw on the colloquial language resources which border on slang and have already been accepted in the language; He/She, needs to take into account the setting, the social status of the speaker, and the historical era during which the plot is set, in order to avoid using an anachronistic term, and so forth. How far the translator can go to lower the language level, in order to adjust the level of intimacy, even vulgarity depends above all on the slang term function within the text, and on the effect the author is looking to achieve by using it. The complexity of all these factors, which have to be taken into consideration when translating slang, will be illustrated with examples taken from the French translation of Viktor Paskov’s novel “Germany: a Dire Tale.”
