Quella “mala lingua” che traduce l’argot

Abstract
The very common phrase “J’y pige que dalle” (‘I haven’t got a clue’) provides a good starting point to address the problem of the translation of the French slang into Italian. Indeed, Italian is a language that, unlike the French, does not have national registers, which are firmly rooted in history or documented by lexicography. The summary presentation of the main constitutive elements of argot will allow us to clarify the meaning of "argot" a notion that is often misused in Italian... In this regard, it seems necessary to postulate and to recognize the presence in the Italian language, of a kind of "mala lingua", in other words a mixture of registers and linguistic varieties existing in Italian and that brings together lexical and linguistic resources that could be tapped into, in order to translate the classic and current argot from France. Finally, we offer a challenge: starting from this hypothesis, we suggest re-translating some “canonial” texts... For example, the translation Umberto Eco has done in roman dialect of “Vulgar" – one of the Exercices de style (style exercises) by Raymond Queneau – could be redone by using this “mala lingua” which is a mixture of Italian neo-standard and substandard, youth language, the jargon of criminals and "illustrious" dialects.
