Les marques de niveau de langue dans les dictionnaires modernes : analyse comparative entre le français, l’ukrainien et le russe

Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

The practice of usage labels or language labels dates back to the first lexicographical studies in the early seventeenth century. Since then it has moved from value judgments to consolidated labels and, more recently, to symbols. Traditionally, the author or authors of the dictionary label non-standard units completely subjectively. The current study examines more than thirty general dictionaries together with the dictionaries of non-standard language in three languages – French, Ukrainian and Russian – all published in first decade of our century. The lexicographical analysis comes with the registers’ definitions listed in the dictionaries analysed. It is also illustrated by five words belonging to different registers. Their labels have been extracted from several general dictionaries and compared firstly in the same language and then between different languages. This research has highlighted the heterogeneity of concepts of low registers in the same language as well as the differences between the compared languages. The simplification of the labelling system in dictionaries, the language labels’ homogenization as well as the development of a clear system of labels’ allocation in dictionaries could simplify the understanding and the translation of the units for language specialists and for learners.
