LOCUS OF CONTROL AND DIETARY BEHAVIOUR IN A GROUP OF PROFESSIONAL TEAM SPORTS ATHLETES

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate selected types of dietary behaviour of a group of athletes depending on their locus of control (LOC). Material and methods. The research was carried out on a group of 296 athletes professionally playing team sports in Cracow sports clubs. The research made use of a specially prepared questionnaire on dietary behaviour and a standardized Delta Drwal questionnaire on LOC. Based on the sten score for Delta questionnaire, it has been found that the sample was dominated by athletes with an external (40.6%) and intermediate locus of control (37.8%), persons with an internal LOC were a minority (21.6%).Results. Incorrect dietary behaviour in the examined group of athletes included low popularity of daily consumption of wholegrain bread (27% of the sample), fruit (58.1), raw vegetables (37.8%), fermented milk products (47.3%) and low-fat cottage cheese (32.4%). A qualitative dietary mistake involved a low consumption of fish and nuts (at least once a week 29.7% and 14.9% respectively), and a high consumption of sweets (at least once a day 40.5%) and sweet fizzy drinks (at least once a week 47.3%). Athletes with an internal locus of control had a higher level of consumption of fermented milk products (P<0.05), low-fat cheese (P<0.001), fish (P<0.01) as well as vegetables and fruit (P<0.001), and a low level of consumption of energy drinks (P<0.01). Conclusions. The research has confirmed common presence of incorrect dietary behaviour within the group of team sports athletes and a diversification of selected dietary habits depending on the locus of control, with more rational dietary choices among individuals having an internal rather than external locus of control.
