Microbial reduction of ketones and its derivatives

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Microbial reduction of ketones is gaining importance in synthetic chemistry as an alternative tool for the synthesis of enantiomeric alcohols. To date biocatalytic reduction of Acetophenone and its derivatives has been widely reported. We have made an attempt to screen some of the microorganisms which were obtained from culture collection centre as well as those isolated in our microbiology lab, for their potential and performance in reduction of ketones. Among the screened microorganisms, used for the reduction of Acetophenone and its derivatives, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger showed significant bioconversion where as Candida viswanathii and Sacchromyces crevisae exhibited the least conversion. As Aspergillus flavus showed maximum ability of bioreduction, it was considered for optimization. The parameter evaluated during optimization includes pH, temperature, and substrate concentration and incubation time. Bioreduction of Acetophenone and p-chloroacetophenone was carried out using seven different strains of fungi. All the strains selected exhibited reduction capability. However, maximum reduction was observed with Aspergillus flavus and the least with Baker’s yeast.
