Abstract

Karol Miarka junior was the only publisher of Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki and Zygmunt Krasiński’s works in the Upper Silesia up to an outbreak of World War I. During the years 1898–1912 he published in Mikołów twenty editions (in fi fty six volumes) of mentioned writers’ works. It constituted a majority (almost 85%) of volumes containing Mickiewicz, Słowacki and Krasiński’s works published in Prussian provinces and almost 10% of these volumes published in Polish lands and abroad. Miarka wanted to popularize Polish romantic literature. That is why he initiated The New Library of Polish Writes series in 1898 and started it with four-volume edition of Mickiewicz’s Poetry. Miarka’s editing preferences were, however, untypical. In comparison with other editors, he published Krasiński’s works above all and Mickiewicz’s the least (15,8% and 5,2%). What is more, he published collective editions fi rst of all (they constituted almost 75% of titles published by Karol Miarka junior). He also prepared special editions for readers from Kingdom of Poland (Polish territory annexed by Russia). They were adapted to Russian censorship’s requirements. In these editions he omitted several texts and changed some words in the others.
