Journal Title: Revista Cuarzo - Year 2020, Vol 26, Issue 1
Abstract
Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS) is the most common atypical variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) which is part of the group of acute autoimmune demyelinating diseases. The following case report describe a 60-year-old male patient resident in Bogotá, Colombia who was hospitalized due to paresthesias in distal portions of upper limbs secondary to upper respiratory symptoms associated with ataxia, areflexia, ophthalmoplegia, for this reasons a lumbar puncture was performed showing albumino-cytological dissociation and due to the rapid progression of the condition (deterioration in less than 24 hours) GBS variant MFS was diagnosed, due to high risk of ventilatory failure the patient was transferred to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where mechanical ventilation was required and human immunoglobulin G treatment was established presenting a stationary clinical evolution after 25 days of hospitalization, reason for which he was transferred to a chronic care unit. The following case report seeks to discuss the clinical findings along with the diagnosis and treatment given to this patient.
