MRI imaging characteristics of pilots with low back pain

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 6

Abstract

Objective To investigate the lumbar MRI imaging characteristics in pilots with low back pain (LBP). Methods Stratified sampling was used to select 75 pilots who were hospitalized for LBP in an Air Force hospital from January 2018 to January 2021 and they were included in observation group. A total of 75 healthy pilots who came to the hospital for physical examination during the same period were included in control group. MRI imaging features of intervertebral discs, vertebral bodies, endplates, facet joints and multifidus were compared between the two groups. Results The incidence of severe intervertebral disc degeneration, disc herniation, severe facet joint degeneration, facet joint effusion, Modic changes, Schmorl nodules and fat infiltration rate of multifidus in the observation group were higher than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0. 05). The cross-sectional area of multifidus in the observation group was smaller than that in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0. 05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in the incidence of disc bulge and posterior annulus fibrous hyperintensity ( P > 0. 05 ) . Conclusion Intervertebral disc degeneration, disc herniation, Modic changes, Schmorl nodules, facet joint degeneration, facet joint effusion, cross-sectional area and fat infiltration rate of multifidus are related to the occurrence of LBP in pilots, which can be used as a reference for clinical diagnosis of LBP in pilots.
