NAMES OF ANIMALS AS LEXICAL BASIS FOR THE CREATION OF UKRAINIAN LAST NAMES (FROM THE LAST NAMES OF CITIZENS OF TROSTIANETS DISTRICT IN VINNYTSIA REGION)

Abstract
In this article we analyzed last names of Trostianets district in Vinnytsia region. The subject of the analysis is the last names derived from names of animals. In Trostianets district there are three thousand one hundred and twenty five last names, which include 122 last names of animal origin and create their own lexical-semantic group. The lexical and semantical classification of these last names was carried out, resulting in their division into 7 thematic groups. Basing on the citizens’ last names derived from the names of animals, most lexemes indicate names of wild birds, domestic and wild animals – 63% out of the total number of the last names derived from the names of the fauna. The smallest is the group of the last names that emerged from the names of domestic birds, insects, rodents (21 % in this LSG). In general, the lexical-semantic group of the last names reveals the richness of the Ukrainian language vocabulary at the time, when the system of last names was formed.
