Network Business Models – How Much Can Reference Theories Explain?

Abstract

In the present age of rapid technology advances, network business models based on digital platforms have come to define our perception of a business model as such, emerging as a promising and viable option for many companies. Although the concept of business model has been recognized as significant by a majority of scholarship, published research focusing on network business models, including those based on digital platforms, is still scarce. Further, there have been rather few research endeavors addressing the theoretical foundations for such models and inquiring into why such models would have a competitive edge. The paper aims to specifically address the question of where the competitive advantage of network business models based on digital platforms arises from, looking from the perspectives proposed by the principal network reference theories, such as transaction cost economics, the resource based view, and the social network theory.
