NEW CONCEPT OF THE ORIGIN OF THE ETHNONYM POLACY (HISTORICAL-ETYMOLOGICAL ASPECT)

Abstract
Problem. Most works consider the ethnonyms Polacy / Polyane in the primary meaning of ʻhabitants of the fieldsʼ. However, the results of modern studies allow a deeper examination of the origin of the ethnonym Polacy and discovery of its other motivation. Research motion. This article considers the followings positions: (1) the underlying viewpoint is the convergent development of peoples, pursuant to which the Polish ethnos was formed on the basis of territorial and gentile closeness of specific tribes whose name originates from the root PS *pol-, (2) in the 1st century AD these slavic tribes inhabited the banks of the Vistula, this being confirmed by its name Wi-sla, Wi-skla that has ancient formants of Sla-, Skla- with the meaning ʻslavic (river)ʼ, (3) the meaning ʻfieldʼ is secondary in the root *pol-, originating from the IE *kwel- ʻploughmenʼ influenced by the Trypillan substrate. Results. The ethnonyms Polacy / Polyane initially correlated with the meaning ʻploughmenʼ, but not ʻfieldʼ, although both concepts originated from one root PS *pol-.
