New paths in a musician’s training – reflections of an instrumentalist

Journal Title: "Konteksty Kształcenia Muzycznego" - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

The author – a performer-instrumentalist as well as teacher and lecturer – discusses in his article the problems of music education perceived from a broader perspective of music being part of a social life. It comprises individual reflections concerning the music education system in Poland, focusing mainly on the necessity of adopting a holistic approach to this type of training. The four educational issues have been selected for discussion: ensemble music-making, sight-reading, improvisation, 20th- and 21st-century music, all of them bearing – in the author’s opinion – a significant developmental potential. On the one hand, they raise the level of graduates’ preparedness for further music studies and, what follows, for a successful professional career in the future; on the other hand, they improve competences of the audience – music-lovers unrelated to professional music-making.
