Stress in musicians-instrumentalists. Findings of the research conducted among Polish students of instrument performance faculties and professional musicians
Journal Title: "Konteksty Kształcenia Muzycznego" - Year 2016, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
Most of the research on stress in musicians deal mainly with the issue connected with sta- ge-fright, regarding it to be one of the most frequent stressors in that occupation. the- re is little discussion in the literature, in turn, on the causes of stress and its intensification resulting from psycho-social threats that do not stem directly from the stage-fright expe- rience. there is even less information on the causes and intensiveness of stress in the po- pulation of higher music school students.the research survey encompassed 102 students of instrument performance faculties and 166 professional instrumentalists. the data were col- lected with the help of the Questionnaire on psycho-social threats for musicians.the findings show that a general stress level experienced by students can be described as average, or even relatively low. in spite of that, female students felt significantly more stressed out by occurring psycho-social threats than male students. it referred not only to an overall stress level but also to stress levels related to particular subcategories of stressors such as job responsibilities, career development, cooperation and lack of job security, or employment predictability. the findings showed, in general, no substantial differences between stress le- vels in female students and their professional counterparts. the only category that indicated crucial differences was the one involving stress related to environmental risks. in the case of men, it was the group of professional musicians that was more stressed out; it turned out that male students actually experienced less stress in general, as well as less stress regarding time burdens, environmental risks associated with cooperation and lack of stability/ predictability.
