Nguillatun as Mapuche Identity Expression: Variations, Transformations and Continuities

Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2016, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the results obtained during the master’s thesis research realized between 2014 and 2015 in Chile, about the mestizo dynamics of a Mapuche religious ceremony, the Nguillatun. The effects of the missionary movements on Nguillatun can be observed in different ways depending on the region or territory. While in some regions the ceremony seems to maintain a more traditional structure, in others demonstrates more syncretic characters. The regional ceremonial differences of different Mapuche identities, determines the impossibility to talk about a homogeneous mestizaje process. The Nguillatun, which cannot be considered separately from the historical power relations, today remains as one of the most important identity expressions of Mapuche society.
