PERIPHRASTIC FEMINITIVES IN MODERN JOURNALISTIC AND POLITICAL DISCOURSE: INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL SYSTEM CORRELATIONS

Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 281

Abstract

In the modern Ukrainian language, there is a tendency towards the creation of the feminitives represented by various linguistic means. One of them is periphrasis. The changes that take place in the modern society and cover different spheres, and the participation of human resources in them, are clearly formed by the secondary nominations. Nowadays, the production of different feminine gender nouns is actively intensified. The range of such lexical units is constantly expanding, involving different lexical-semantic groups. The society reacts ambiguously to these innovations: some people perceive them as a norm, as the challenge of the time, while the others reject them strongly and prefer the masculine gender. Gender processes have penetrated through such a multi-faceted language phenomenon, as periphrasis. The periphrastic feminitives are widely used in the journalistic and political discourse which quickly reacts to different socio-political changes. The process of legitimizing gender relations through the sphere of female secondary nomination is influenced by some extra and intra-lingual factors, which are usually synchronous. The invariant periphrasis field "woman" is differentiated into specific periphrastic fields, which are combined into semantic types that can be divided into periphrastic models. The mechanism of creating descriptive structures studied in this article is complex since it is based on linguistic and extra-linguistic (motivational) factors. As for the typology of periphrastic fields, it covers the names of "Yuliia Tymoshenko", "Nadiia Savchenko", "Nataliia Vitrenko", "Anna Herman", "Inna Bohoslovska", "Alla Aleksandrovska" and others. The semantic types, each has its component composition, semantic specification, axiological potential, are rather heterogeneous in terms of informative content. Firstly, it has been observed the tendency of dominating the periphrases with negative connotation over the positive ones, and it confirms the existence of unresolved problems in the contemporary Ukrainian socio-political life. Secondly, symmetric-asymmetric relations between semantic types are established on periphrastic fields, which relate to their formal-grammatical structure, semantic structure, and connotative peculiarities. Thirdly, practically every periphrastic field has a semantic opposition "positive-negative" that performs an important characterizing function and is formed by means of deterministic constituents used literally or figuratively, and distribution members often take on the role of a semantic (onomasiological) marker. It is noteworthy that the periphrastic feminitives regularly include the nouns of the feminine gender (vozhdynia (female chief), chlenkynia (female member), politykynia (female politician), leaderka (female leader), hetmanka (female hetman)). Some of them have parallel forms that confirm the process of visualization and codification. Two semantic types of feminitives have been described in detail: one of them refers to the politics – "women appearance", the other one is directly connected with the politics – "women party affiliation". The author has established the periphrastic fields and described their hierarchy in terms of the internal structures and external paradigm correlations. It has been proved that the broadest periphrastic field has the name "Yulia Tymoshenko", that confirms the special role of this woman in the recent Ukrainian political life.
