Physical activity and physical fitness in physiotherapy students of the University of Rzeszow

Abstract

Physical activity is one of the most important factors influencing our health con­dition, general physical and mental state and the quality of life. The most important impact factor in the process of therapeutic treatment, in professional physiotherapists’ work is exercise. That is why different forms of physical activities should be included in the curriculum so that physiotherapy students would accept exercise as a means guaranteeing recovery of the treated patients, allowing them to keep and improve their own health as well. The aim of the thesis was to compare the activity and physical fitness of the students during the first and last year of their studies, major Physiotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine, Rzeszów University and determine whether there is any effect of physical activity examined on their physical fitness, and of physical fitness on physical activity.100 Physiotherapy students at Rzeszów University took part in the test, including 32 men and 68 women. The mean age of the sample was 22,37 years. The respondents were divided into four groups. The subjects’ hysical fitness was assessed with the Zuchora Physical Fitness Test, and the level of physical activity with a short version the International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ. The physical fitness of students in all groups, according to Zuchora Index of Physical Activity was at a proper level. Considerably fewer people were found to have good and high fitness levels, whereas there were no subjects presenting an outstanding fitness level. Based on the IPAQ it was shown that that subjects spend most of their leisure time performing the activity of moderate intensity.It was shown that in the education of physiotherapy students a greater emphasis should place be placed on physical activity and physical fitness. It was found that age determines the level of physical activity whereas gender considerably influenced the level of physical activity and fitness which was reflected by better results obtained from the male subjects.
