PHYSICAL CULTURE OF THE ANCIENT WORLD: A PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW

Abstract

The life-system of the ancient individual (anthropocentrism, polis system, cosmologicality, agon, amusement, etc.) determined the characteristics and manner of behavior of a citizen, was aimed at satisfying his vital needs, among which gradually emphasized the need for physical exercise. Physical culture (agonistic), as a form of leisure and an element of the development of the ancient society, contributed to the formation of virtues, brought people glory, public recognition and became an attribute of the cultural fundamentals of the ancient man. Thinkers of this period have repeatedly expressed their opinion about the importance of physical exercises in the harmonious development of personality.
