POLYFUNCTIONALITY OF THE LANDSCAPE IN LITERARY TEXTS ON MILITARY THEMES

Abstract

The article focuses on the study of the functioning peculiarities of the landscape lexical-thematic units in contemporary British fi ction on military themes. Lexical-thematic groupings (LTG) in the lexical-semantic space of the authors’ literary texts serve a particular aim – to represent the fragment of the individual author’s picture of the world. The use of thematic-lexical sets emphasizes a certain theme or idea encoded by the author, or creates the background for the development of other events in the literary text space. The landscape lexical units play a signifi cant role in the lexical-semantic space of contemporary British literary texts on military themes (TMT). A lot of scholars focused their attention on the polyfunctionality of the landscape in a literary text (LT). Nevertheless, the use of landscape lexical-thematic units and their role in British texts on military themes of the beginning of the XXI century still remains unexplored. As a result of this research, it has been established that lexical-thematic units representing natural environment in TMT not only provide the spatial-temporal characteristics, but perform other semantic functions as well: they contribute to the dynamism or slowing down of the tempo of the narrative, create a special emotional background in the text, express national identity and individual-author’s worldview, and fi nally, completely refl ect the inner state of the characters and external events in their lives. Thus, landscape lexical units constitute a signifi cant inalienable element of the lexical-semantic space of the literary TMT.
