Port and Territory: global analysis and local debate

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2009, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

In the present context of globalisation and the processes of decentralization, the role and importance of the city-port tend to be redefned in a frame of global and regional networks, influenced by intermodality and complex infrastructures. We propose a map of the transformations of port cities in the global context, their economic bonds and the territories that contain them, in their location as well as in the justifcation of their existence as an open door to global communications. Moreover, from these premises and with a magnifying glass on these territories, we will try to understand the debate on the port areas, their transformations and resettings, based on productive inputs or on other interests, but closer to the urban functionality rather than to the port one. The glance on the surroundings of the Mar del Plata port in these two scenes, the global-regional and the local one, is unavoidable, since it is on this territory-city where an analysis of the global issue sets out and triggers to generate the debate.
